UN Human Rights Council Unanimously Condemns Iran’s Missile and Drone Attacks, Citing Grave Human Rights Violations Across the Region

In a powerful demonstration of global unity, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has unanimously ratified a resolution condemning the severe human rights implications of Iran’s recent missile and drone attacks. The resolution, adopted without a vote, saw overwhelming support with more than 100 countries co-sponsoring the critical measure. The affected nations—Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, and Jordan—have endured significant breaches of their sovereignty and a direct threat to the well-being of their citizens.

The decision followed an urgent and impassioned debate convened by the Council in Geneva. Central to this discussion was the robust condemnation delivered by Qatar’s Her Excellency Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, Dr. Hind Abdulrahman al-Muftah. Speaking on behalf of Doha, Dr. al-Muftah described the attacks as a flagrant violation of Qatar’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, directly contravening the UN Charter’s fundamental prohibition on the threat or use of force.

Al-Muftah underscored the gravity of the situation, telling the Council that the debate was held under “extremely perilous circumstances.” She issued a stark warning that the ripple effects of Iran’s offensive threatened not only regional stability but also the full enjoyment of human rights across all the affected nations. The strikes, deliberately targeting civilians and vital civilian infrastructure, were highlighted as clear violations of international humanitarian and human rights law. Critical facilities hit included airports, ports, energy installations, and crucial water desalination plants—lifelines for millions.

Qatar itself bore the brunt of ballistic missile and drone strikes, resulting in civilian casualties, injuries, and widespread disruption to basic services. Water and energy supplies were severely impacted, which, as Dr. al-Muftah pointed out, constituted direct breaches of the rights to life, health, education, and safety for the population. Beyond immediate harm, Her Excellency further warned of the grave environmental consequences stemming from attacks on energy and desalination infrastructure, undermining the fundamental right to a clean and sustainable environment. She particularly emphasized how the most vulnerable – women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities – were disproportionately affected, in direct contravention of international conventions designed to protect them.

Alarm was also raised over strikes targeting crucial maritime shipping lanes, most notably the Strait of Hormuz. Dr. al-Muftah cautioned that any disruption to one of the world’s most critical waterways would trigger far-reaching consequences for global supply chains, energy security, and the socioeconomic rights of nations worldwide. Such actions demonstrate a disregard for global economic stability and the interconnectedness of international commerce.

A key point stressed by HE Al-Muftah was Qatar’s complete non-involvement in the underlying conflict. She clarified that Qatar had not permitted its territory or airspace to be used in any combat operations, making Iran’s targeting of Qatari soil a particularly egregious violation of international law. Qatar, she noted, has consistently advocated for and pursued dialogue and mediation as its preferred approach to resolving regional disputes, upholding its commitment to peaceful resolutions.

The Qatari representative welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), which formally condemned Iran’s attacks and determined them to constitute a serious threat to international peace and security. She reiterated the call for effective remedies and full reparations for all victims and affected states, stressing the importance of accountability.

Concluding her powerful address, Dr. al-Muftah urged an immediate halt to the escalation of hostilities and called on all parties to prioritise diplomatic solutions. She appealed to Council member states to back the resolution, thereby reaffirming the international community’s unwavering commitment to upholding human rights, halting violations, and ensuring that such destructive attacks are never repeated.
